When the girls take Aquamarine shopping, they have to "take the bus to Tampa" to go to a mall, where they shop at one of the mall's vintage clothing stores. The action is set in a Florida beach town called Baybridge, apparently meant to be somewhere around here. Paxton's especially appealing, but everyone does pretty well.Īdults in west-central Florida can amuse themselves with the local references and anomalies. Yes, it's very dumb, but there are a few cute moments and some clever lines scattered throughout, and the acting is better than it really has to be. Meanwhile, stereotypical snotty hot girls vie for Raymond's attention and torment Claire and Hailey. In exchange for her promise of granting a wish, the two girls decide to help her snag him (with the assistance of all those teen magazine tips). If she doesn't get someone to say "I love you" to her in three days, she has to go back to the sea.Īquamarine sees Raymond, and she's smitten. She has three days, for some reason, to prove to her father that love exists. She has come ashore because she believes in love, something outside the realm of experience for your typical mermaid. Meanwhile, he's more interested in girls closer to his own age, maybe five or six years older than Claire and Hailey.Īfter a storm, the girls discover Aquamarine the mermaid (Sara Paxton of TV's "Summerland") stranded in a pool after a storm. They endlessly consult teen magazines for clues on how to attract him. The film opens on a Florida beach, where two squealing girls, Claire (Emma Roberts, niece of Julia Roberts) and Hailey (teen singer JoJo, billed as Joanna "JoJo" Levesque), have a huge crush on Raymond, a supernaturally cute lifeguard (Jake McDorman). It's aimed at pre-teen girls, and judging by the reaction of such girls at a preview screening ("I loved it! I loved it! I loved it!" shrieked one as the closing credits rolled), it hits it target.įor anyone outside that age and gender category, though, "Aquamarine" is unoriginal but essentially innocuous, only barely passable as a time-killer. It's a cute little movie that ends with a refreshingly positive (and not altogether expected) moral about love and friendship. And if you're old enough to remember "Splash," or old enough even to watch a romantic comedy when it comes on TV, you're likely to be a bit offended by its abject lack of originality.īut then, if you're over 12, and if you are not now or never have been a girl, you are obviously not in the target demographic for "Aquamarine." Yes, "Aquamarine" is a blatant rip-off of "Splash," the 1984 man-meets-mermaid romantic comedy. And the mermaid's lack of experience with American culture leads to madcap hijinks. Meanwhile, bad guys figure out she's a mermaid and try to expose her, leading everyone to think they're crazy. The object of her affection is attracted to her beauty and finds her disingenuousness appealing. ![]() ![]() As long as she keeps the lower half of her body dry she has legs once they touch water, they transform back into a tail fin. "Aquamarine" tells the story of a beautiful young mermaid who comes on land to find love. If you're over age 12, you've seen all this before.
